Loss of sea ice will bring severe winters

There will be twice as many severe winters as usual in Britain in the coming decades, climate scientists have warned. New research supports previous studies that indicate a change in the winter climate over Eurasia as a result of the loss of Arctic sea ice.

Portsmouth man faces terror charge

A second man from Portsmouth has been charged with preparing acts of terrorism. Mustakim Jaman, 23, of Southsea has been charged under the Terrorism Act 2006. He was one of several people arrested in Hampshire and London on 14 October and is due in court today.

Falsely accused man explains ‘abuse’ lie

John Clark, whose ex-wife Eileen pleaded guilty last week to “international kidnapping” after she took their three children to England 19 years ago, said she fabricated claims of abuse at his hands as she feared she would not get custody of the children in a divorce. page 27

Five million in low-paid work

A record five million workers are now in low-paid jobs, according to a report. The Resolution Foundation said the numbers earning less than two-thirds of median hourly pay – equivalent to £7.69 an hour – increased by 250,000 last year to reach 5.2 million.

Goalkeeper shot dead hours after match

South Africa national football team goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has died after being shot, it was reported last night. Meyiwa, 27, also played for the Orlando Pirates and was reportedly shot hours after playing for the team.

Ukip ‘exploits’ Rotherham scandal

Ukip has been criticised for exploiting the misery of Rotherham sex-abuse victims in its attempt to win its first Police and Crime Commissioner election. The anti-EU party has been widely condemned for launching its “1,400 reasons to vote” campaign – a reference to the estimated number of victims of paedophile gangs in Rotherham over a 16-year period.

A row over a painting bought for £140 in 1962 is at the High Court today. Sotheby’s is being sued over claims that it misattributed a work to a follower of Caravaggio.

Foot’s walking stick raises £650

Michael Foot’s favourite walking stick has sold for £650 at auction. The money will go towards a £42,000 bench in his honour in his former Devonport constituency.
