LA suspect may face death penalty

The 23-year-old man accused of opening fire at Los Angeles International Airport, killing an airport security officer and wounding three other people, could face the death penalty. He was charged with murder on Saturday, a day after the shooting. MORE

Plane crash-lands during sea search

Two fishermen remain missing after the search and rescue plane looking for them crash landed on the north coast of Jersey. Reports from Devil’s Hole, in St Mary, suggest its crew of five survived but sustained injuries. At 7.15pm the aircraft’s engines reportedly failed suddenly.

Rihanna’s seven are magnificent

Rihanna has joined The Beatles and Elvis Presley as one of just three acts to top the UK singles chart seven times over seven years. The singer has stormed into the number one spot, as the featured artist on rap star Eminem’s new track ‘The Monster’.

Cancer patients from poor areas die earlier

Cancer patients living in the most deprived parts of England are a third less likely to be alive five to 10 years after diagnosis than those in the most affluent areas. Figures from Macmillan Cancer Support show people in poorer areas are 33 per cent less likely to survive.

Two rescued from car hanging off M6

Two people avoided a 30ft drop off the M6 flyover in Merseyside yesterday after their car, with its rear hanging off the road, was recovered by fire crews using winches and cables. The North West Ambulance Service said one person had suffered a leg injury in the 8.30am incident.

Pirates gain $413m from hijacking ships

Pirates operating off the Horn of Africa extracted up to $413m (£259m) in ransom payments from shipping companies between 2005 and 2012, according to a report published today by the World Bank. Pirates can earn as much as $75,000 each for their roles in a hijacking. MORE

The Government has launched a £1m investigation into the discrimination faced by pregnant women and its impact on families and the economy. More than 9,000 pregnancy discrimination claims have been brought against UK employers since 2007 and there is evidence that the recession has made discrimination by employers more common and more blatant. Rebels call ceasefire ahead of peace talks

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s M23 rebels declared a ceasefire in their fight against the army yesterday in a bid to advance peace talks. There was no immediate reaction from the military, which has pushed the rebels out of all the towns they controlled during a 20-month rebellion in North Kivu province.

UK ‘deprives poorer countries of doctors’

The UK has been guilty of fuelling a “brain drain” of healthcare workers from some of the world’s poorest countries that threatens to reverse gains in global disease control, a leading health charity has warned. Rich countries are collectively saving billions every year by taking on professionals trained overseas. MORE

Wild boar ‘swam over from France’

A wild boar on the loose in Alderney for more than a month is thought to have swum there from France. The beast was last sighted on Friday, but jumped a 3ft fence when approached. Islanders call the boar “ghost pig”, as it’s only seen at dusk.

Hundreds fall ill growing cannabis

Doctors in Albania say hundreds have fallen ill from harvesting cannabis in a lawless region that has been out of bounds to police for years. Some 700 people are said to have sought treatment since June for the effects of producing the cannabis in the village of Lazarat.

Private cinemas to be closed down

Cuban authorities are bringing down the curtain at the island’s privately run cinemas and video game salons, announcing on Saturday that the businesses are unauthorised and that proprietors must halt their activities immediately.
