Lampedusa tragedy: 111 bodies recovered

The search for survivors off the coast of Lampedusa was called off yesterday as conditions worsened. So far 111 bodies have been recovered after a boat carrying 500 African migrants capsized. Rescue services said half of those confirmed dead were women. MORE

DC car-chase mother had postnatal stress

A woman who was shot dead after leading police on a car chase through Washington DC was suffering from postnatal stress. The driver, identified as Miriam Carey, a dental hygienist living in Stamford, Connecticut, had her 18-month-old child in the back seat of the car. MORE

Channel 4 executive denies ageism claim

Channel 4's chief creative officer has denied John McCririck's claims of "age discrimination". Jay Hunt told a tribunal she felt the former presenter had made "false allegations". Ms Hunt stated she had "learnt" lessons from Moira Stewart's decision to leave the BBC, citing ageism.

Sick Forsyth pulls out of 'Strictly'

Sir Bruce Forsyth has pulled out of hosting tonight's Strictly Come Dancing as he has flu. Host of the series since it launched in 2004, he last missed a programme through illness in 2009. The 85-year-old will be replaced by Claudia Winkleman, co-host of the results programme.

Four die in riots over murder of imam

Riots sparked by the murder of an Islamist cleric have left four dead in Mombasa. Sheikh Ibrahim Omar, a preacher at a mosque which has alleged links to al-Shabaab, was killed with three companions when the car he was in was shot at by unknown assailants on Thursday night.

Protests as state is split into two

Fresh protests have rocked the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh after the government approved a plan to split the state in two and create a new region, called Telangana. The federal government bowed to separatists who claimed they had been discriminated against.

Ken Clarke to stand in 2015 election

Ken Clarke will stand for re-election in 2015, ending speculation he was set to retire after more than 40 years in Parliament. The 73-year-old has been formally adopted as the Tory candidate for Rushcliffe, after telling fellow Tories of his "continuing enthusiasm for life in Parliament".

Judge denies altering statements

A barrister and judge has denied perverting the course of justice in connection with the Chris Huhne case. Constance Briscoe(pictured) pleaded not guilty at the Old Bailey to charges alleging she doctored witness statements. She will stand trial at Southwark Crown Court on 14 January.

Fans of Breaking Bad have placed an obituary for character Walter White in the Albuquerque Journal, the town where the series was filmed. The notice was headlined "White, Walter" and included a photo of Bryan Cranston, the actor who played the chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin.

Grandfather picks up the wrong child

An investigation has been launched at the Napier Community Primary School in Gillingham, Kent, after it handed over the wrong child to a grandfather who came to collect her for a doctor's appointment. It is understood the grandfather did not realise he had the wrong child.

Europe court awards Kasparov €10,000

The European Court of Human Rights has ordered the Russian government to compensate the chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov €10,000 (£8,500) for his arrest at a protest. Kasparov called the decision a "clear precedent against Putin's system of repression in the courts".

Cameron turns down TV bread role

Downing Street has dismissed as "half-baked" a tongue-in-cheek proposal for David Cameron to present a TV show called Baking With Dave. The Food Network channel pitched the idea after the PM said he preferred to make his own and did not know the price of a budget loaf.

Usain Bolt tells boy of his great win

Usain Bolt has surprised an eight-year-old boy who lost all four limbs from an infection to tell him he had won a Pride of Britain Award. The Olympic gold medallist crept up on athletics fan Harley Lane during a shopping trip. Harley lost his limbs after a bout of meningitis.
