Mayor of Kharkiv shot in the back

The mayor of Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv was shot in the back and hundreds of men attacked a peaceful pro-Ukraine rally with bats and bricks, wounding dozens. Meanwhile the US and the EU ratcheted up sanctions on individuals and companies in Russia.

Former Newcastle striker arrested

An ex-Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of common assault and criminal damage. Wiltshire Police said a 23-year-old man, believed to be Swindon Town striker Nile Ranger, has been detained by officers and remains in custody.

Kerry criticised over apartheid comments

Republicans in Congress and pro-Israel groups have criticised the US Secretary of State John Kerry for reportedly saying in private talks with foreign officials that Israel could become an apartheid state if it doesn’t reach a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Suspects identified in MP abuse case

At least 11 suspects have been identified over allegations of sexual abuse at a school linked to Cyril Smith, as police revealed they would investigate whether there had been a cover-up to protect the late Liberal MP.

Greater Manchester police said it was investigating historical allegations of abuse at Knowl View School in Rochdale, where the former MP served as a governor.

Evans has Tory whip restored

The Conservative Party has restored the whip to MP Nigel Evans after he was cleared of committing a string of sexual offences. Mr Evans, who represents Ribble Valley, was found not guilty of nine allegations after a five-week trial just over a fortnight ago.

Cancer survival rate reaches 50 per cent

Half of all people diagnosed with cancer in England and Wales today will survive the disease, as the global fight against cancer reaches a “tipping point”. Cancer Research said that by the 2030s, three in every four cancer patients would survive 10 years after diagnosis.

Search for MH370 to be extended

The chance of finding floating debris from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight is now highly unlikely, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said. A new phase will focus on a far larger area of the Indian Ocean floor.

Three generations perish in house fire

Tributes have been paid to three generations of a family who died in a house fire in Sheffield, including grandmother Shabbina Begum, 54, who died after re-entering the inferno in a bid to save her three grandchildren. Their mother Anum Parwaiz Kayani, 20, also died.
