Anne Hathaway sheds some perspective on the Jennifer Lawrence 'scolds reporter' incident

Hathaway wants an end to the 'sad but common practice of building up women just to viciously tear them down'

Anne Hathaway has come to Jennifer Lawrence's defence after an off-the-cuff comment led to suggestions the Joy actress was “going too far” just for making a joke.

Lawrence has endeared herself to journalists and fans for appearing forthright, frank and sincere in interviews and at press conferences. However, her tendency to crack jokes in between repetitive rounds of questions was less well received during an exchange at the Golden Globes on Sunday evening.

“You can’t live your whole life behind your phone bro,” Lawrence told a reporter at a press conference back stage. “You can’t do that, you’ve got to live in the now, you know?” The journalist, who was apparently reading the question from his phone, then mistakenly asked her about “the Oscar night”.

Lawrence couldn't help but make another quip, reminding him: “We're at the Golden Globes; if you put your phone down, you'd know that.”

Her comments prompted laughter from the audience but led to a string of ‘Lawrence scolds journalist’ headlines and tweets accusing her of being rude.

Fortunately, Hathaway was on hand on Friday evening to shed some much-needed perspective on the affair by calling out the tendency to publically admonish high profile women the moment they go off script.

“It's become pretty clear that the Jennifer Lawrence ‘scolding’ was taken out of context and that she was dryly joking with a journalist who was indeed using his phone to take photos of her,” she wrote on Facebook.

“Let's not continue the sad but common practice of building people - especially women - up just to viciously tear them down when we perceive them to have miss-stepped. Jennifer is a beautiful, talented, wildly successful, popular, FOUR TIME OSCAR NOMINATED young woman. Please let us not punish her for these things.”
