Donald Trump video: Stephen Colbert warns 'all the Tic Tacs in the world will not fresh his breath after this'

Misogynistic remarks about groping women have finally come back to haunt the man currently in the running to be the President of the United States, and the condemnation has been severe.

Donald Trump is now scrambling to regain control of his image after comments he made in 2005 were unearthed this week.

The 70-year-old was heard bragging about what he could do to women because of his celebrity status to Access Hollywood host Billy Bush, apparently unaware his comments were being recorded on his microphone.

“I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her,” he said. “You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful - I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. When you’re a star they’ll let you do it, you can do anything. Grab ‘em by the p****. You can do anything.”

“I've said and done things I regret, and the words released today in a decade-old video are one of them,” Mr Trump in a taped apology issued after the audio was published by the Washington Post. “Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologise.”

Stephen Colbert, one of his most acerbic critics, responded with his own video on social media, which was taped in his home in New Jersey. The Late Show host did not hold back.

“All the tic tacs in the world will not freshen his breath after this,” he said after watching the footage.

“Here’s what I really found disgusting. Trump says in the video when you’re a star they let you get away with anything, and unfortunately, that’s true. Because Donald Trump is the Republican nominee. Hopefully someday you’ll be telling the story of how he tried to f**k America, and failed.”

Some within his own party turned on him, branding his comments indefensible.

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said he was “sickened” by the tape and disinvited the billionaire business mogul to an event. He was lambasted by former Republican nominee Mitt Romney: “Such vile degradations demean our wives and daughters and corrupt America's face to the world.” RNC chairman Reince Priebus issued a statement, saying: “No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.”
