Fans of Gary Barlow were left shocked after an anonymous hacker broke into his official Twitter account and posted an offensive message about his stillborn child.

The Take That singer has faced a backlash in the wake of news he and two of his bandmates – Mark Owen and Howard Donald – are facing a £20million tax bill after they invested £66million in an Icebreaker Management partnership tax avoidance scheme.

Since then, there have been calls for the star to hand back his OBE, which he was awarded for services to the entertainment industry and to charity in 2012.

The message was live for eight minutes, before it was spotted and deleted from the account.

However, over 230 followers had already retweeted it, many expressing their shock at the tone of the post, which not only referred to the tragic death of Barlow’s fourth child in 2012, but also used a homophobic slur.

“@GaryBarlow This is the worst troll I have ever witnessed on Twitter!” one replied.

“@GaryBarlow who is that commenting? That’s disgusting,” another added.

“@GaryBarlow I knew trolls would do this. This is down to the Media, this is down to MPs, and down to Lily Allen an’ all! Shame on them all!”

The hack came after Lily Allen criticised Barlow for his part in the tax avoidance scheme.

Taking to Twitter to voice her opinion, she posted:
