Sky News anchor Kay Burley mistakenly tweeted her condolences about the death of Malcolm Muggeridge - who died 26 years ago - rather than Cliff Michelmore.

Mr Michelmore, a leading figure for BBC television and radio who anchored coverage of the Apollo moon landings, died this week aged 96.

She confused him with Mr Muggeridge, a journalist and author who died in 1990.

When asked why she thought he died today, Ms Burley replied: "Because I confused him with Cliff Mitchelmore [sic], sadly."

Many were quick to point out her mistake on Twitter:

In response, Ms Burley thanked her followers for correcting her, saying some had been more polite than others.

The "RIP Malcolm Muggeridge" tweet remains on Twitter.

Ms Burley has previously faced a backlash on social media for tweeting a picture following the Paris attacks of a dog with "sadness in his eyes".
