Jeremy Corbyn has been doing his best to appear down with the electorate recently: dad-dancing in Sunderland, graciously taking a ribbing from three comedians in a self-deprecating appearance on The Last Leg - even cracking the occasional, very dead-pan, ‘joke.

But on Wednesday the famously stoic Labour leader undid all of this hard work when he went head to head with Labour leadership challenger Owen Smith in a pop culture round.

Mr Smith (probably) surprised himself and everyone else when he correctly identified Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift from a picture.

But Mr Corbyn could only apologise after he couldn't name Britain’s most famous presenting duo during his appearance in the BBC hustings.

However, he did know the pair are Labour supporters and said they had written a letter to him afterwards.

Viewers were astonished.

The live debate has asked a host of other questions crucial to determining leadership ability, including personal interests (cycling, growing beans) and who thinks they are going to win. Follow the Independent's live blog on the two-hour debate here.
