Man arrested for stealing Eddie Izzard's hat during March for Europe

A man has been charged with theft after Eddie Izzard had his pink beret stolen at a March for Europe protest in London.

The 54-year-old comedian, who completed 27 marathons in 27 days earlier this year, was walking with thousands of anti-Brexit demonstrators on Whitehall on Saturday when his trademark hat was taken.

Izzard chased after the man in his high heels before police floored him and Izzard was able to retrieve his hat.

David Czerwonko, 26, from Clitherow Road, Brentford, has been charged with theft and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 19 September.

Police have since taken the beret away as evidence.

Thousands took to the streets on Saturday in a series of rallies protesting against the vote to leave the EU. Demonstrations were also held in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Oxford, and Cambridge in support of a closer relationship between Britain and Europe and delaying the formal process of triggering article 50 and leaving the EU.

Campaigners marched from Hyde Park to the Houses of Parliament on Saturday, where a debate on whether a second EU referendum should be held will be take place on Monday.
