Angela “Big Ang” Raiola, the star of a the VH1 reality TV series Mob Wives, has died almost a year after being diagnosed with throat cancer.

Her family confirmed her death just hours after they were forced to deny false reports she had died.

In a statement on her official Twitter feed, friend Vinnie Medugno said the 55-year-old passed away early on Thursday at a New York City hospital while surrounded by family and friends.

“YOU (Her fans) were some of the most special people in her world, and she loved you immensely,” the statement said. “Thank you for your love, prayers, and unconditional support of Angela right to the end.”

Raiola was diagnosed with throat cancer in March 2015 and underwent surgery to remove a tumour. She was diagnosed with stage four cancer in December after it spread to her brain and her lungs.

She was one of the most outspoken figures on the show and gave an interview just weeks before her death, where she talked candidly about her illness.
