Ricki Hall is a model known for his numerous tattoos and his large beard, but now is known for taking fashion inspiration from the homeless.
The model, who said he hates to be called a “hipster,” has not only come under heavy fire for his opinion that homeless people “can put anything together and it just works,” but has also been heavily mocked for appearing to echo a character from Zoolander.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, in which he details a typical day in his life, Halls says that after having coffee and breakfast he usually goes for a run around Brockley park in South London.
“I use this time to think about my day. I take style tips from everything, even kids to homeless people. They can pull anything together and it just works," he is quoted as saying.
People on Twitter have slammed Hall for his throwaway comment. One user named Jess wrote, “Hey Ricki Hall, here are some more ‘style tips for homeless people’,” linking to the national membership charity for homelessness, which aims to end homelessness.
“Style tips for homeless people: poor physical health, mental health problems, drug abuse, unemployment,” Jess added.
Others have made direct comparisons with the Zoolander character Mugatu, who created an entire fashion range called “Derelicte,” the “fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique”.
Hall retweeted the Sunday Times magazine’s promotional tweet about the interview, but later said he had been “misquoted a few times”.
Readers also made comments about Hall specifying that he sprays himself with Lynx Africa after a shower, with many joking that they hadn't used the Lynx brand since they were teenagers.
Hall has not yet responded for a request for comment on which parts of the interview have been misquoted, though he later Tweeted "Haha I don't know where that came from. I haven't used Lynx Africa since I was 12."
