Thought 2013 was the year of Miley twerking with strange men dressed as Beetlejuice, Kim Kardashian parading around with a bizarrely named new baby and Rihanna causing animal rights outrage everywhere from Thailand to South Africa?

Think again. Because the most searched for celebrity on the internet this year did absolutely none of the above.

Beyoncé Knowles beat the headline-grabbing competition to be named the world’s highest ranking human being of 2013 according to Bing, leaving the rest of celebdom trailing in her warbling wake.

Sure enough, it’s been a busy year for the star, what with the controversy surrounding her fifth wedding anniversary holiday to Cuba with husband Jay Z – and Barack Obama’s alleged involvement in approving the trip (US citizens are banned from visiting the Caribbean country without government permission).

Then there’s the time she got lambasted by the American public for singing over a pre-recorded track on Inauguration Day, reunited with Destiny’s Child at the Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show, starred in the sickly-sweet Bey-and-Z love-in that was her Life is But a Dream documentary and told women the world over to “Bow Down, b**tches”, before being attacked by feminists for going back on her formerly female friendly “Independent Women” persona.

Oh, and she cut her hair multiple times, sheering her mane of curls into a bob and a pixie crop, both of which just so happen to be two of the highest hair and beauty search terms this year. So, not so surprising after all.

What is surprising, however, is just how far her behind Miley Cyrus appears. The pop star trails at No 9 in the Top 10 List, published on E! Online yesterday.

Despite yards of never-ending press coverage on her semi-naked turn in the Terry Richardson-directed "Wrecking Ball" music video, a very public feud with Sinead O’Connor, her highly publicised split with Hunger Games hunk Liam Hemsworth and her apparent defamation of that icon of chaste morality, the foam finger, during the MTV Video Music Awards, she failed to chart above troubled American star Amanda Byrnes, who beat her to No.8.

However, Justin Bieber wins out as the most searched for celebrity on Bing in the UK alone. The good-boy-turned-bad outranks Beyoncé and the Duchess of Cambridge to top the chart in Britain.
