The BBC has confirmed that it has dropped Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson from the show following an alleged ‘fracas’ with producer Oisin Tymon.

BBC Director General Tony Hall confirmed today that Clarkson’s contract would not be renewed after an internal investigation concluded that the controversial presenter launched a sustained “unprovoked physical and verbal attack” on Tymon, when he was informed that there was no hot food available at a Yorkshire hotel after a long day’s filming.

Along with legions of Top Gear fans taking to Twitter to mourn the departure of Clarkson, his co-presenters also expressed their dismay at the decision.

Richard Hammond posted on Twitter, "Gutted at such a sad end to an era. We're all three of us idiots in our different ways but it's been an incredible ride together."

While James May hinted that he may not continue on Top Gear without Clarkson, saying, “I don’t want to talk about that too much. I think we’re very much the three of us as a package, it works for very complicated reasons that a lot of people don’t fully understand. So that will require a lot of careful thought,” he told Sky News.
