Prince Harry was able to sum up his feelings on being shunted from fourth to fifth in line to the throne with just one word: “Great”.

The birth of Prince Harry’s niece, the new Princess of Cambridge, means the Prince of Wales’ second son edges one step further away from being king.

Currently in Australia on secondment with the country’s armed forces, Prince Harry said he “can’t wait” to meet the new princess, who is “absolutely beautiful”.

The Princess of Cambridge was born on Saturday at 8.34am at the exclusive Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, central London.

Prince Harry, who is formally known as Prince Henry of Wales, was third in line to the throne when he was born in 1984.
