Selena Gomez spent two weeks in a rehabilitation centre at the start of January, her representative has confirmed.

However, the spokesperson reiterated, the former girlfriend of Justin Bieber was not being treated for substance abuse.

Instead, the 21-year-old singer spent two weeks in a recovery facility which treats young people struggling with "emotional trauma, addiction or dual diagnosis concerns".

"Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse," her spokesperson confirmed.

Gomez entered the centre just a day after Bieber posted a picture of the pair cuddling on Instagram, which sparked a slew of reports that the couple had rekindled their romantic relationship. “Love the way you look at me,” the caption accompanying the photograph read.

The singer had cancelled a string of concert dates in Australia just two weeks before she was admitted to the facility.

At the time, she released a statement saying that she needed to "spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.

"My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them,“ the 21-year-old said at the time.

"But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be."

The news comes just a week after Gomez’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber was arrested for a second time.

The pop star turned himself in at a police station in Toronto, where he was charged with allegedly assaulting a limousine driver.

Seven days prior to that, he was arrested in Miami, originally on three charges: DUI, drag racing and resisting arrest without violence. However, the former two charges were dropped two days later.

Speaking in support of Bieber at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Gomez said: “Part of life and growing up are going through things that aren’t comfortable — and you hope you come out the other side a stronger person.

"I will always care about Justin no matter what," she continued. "My instinct after all we have been through is to protect him from any harm… Whatever he is going through, I want to see him come out the other side stronger."

Bieber will appear in court on 3 March.
