Tatiana Maslany: Who is the Golden Globe favourite taking Twitter by storm?

She was trending within seconds after the announcement, but what do we really know about the Orphan Black star?

Within seconds of the announcement that she has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Television, Tatiana Maslany became the most talked about star on Twitter.

Yet despite the fact it was her name trending just below ‘Golden Globes’ and ahead of every other thesp on the list, few of us had heard of her until that moment.

She has, of course, received the recognition for her lead role in sci-fi series Orphan Black, in which she plays not one character, Sarah, but several identical women who are later revealed to be clones.

So, before she becomes 2014’s breakaway headline-hitter in the UK (she’s already garnered quite the fanbase in the US and in her native Canada), here are her vital stats:

Name: Tatiana Maslany

Age: 28

Nationality: Canadian (though of Ukrainian, Polish, German, Austrian, and Romanian descent)

Parents: Her mother is a translator, her father, a woodworker.

Siblings? Yes. Two younger brothers, Michael and Daniel.

Star Of: Orphan Black, Nativity, The Vow (also starring Channing Tatum, but we'll gloss over that one ), Cronenberg's Eastern Promises and Heartland. Oh, and Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. And for the latter alone, she is already a legend in our books.

Originated in: Comedy improv. Which she specialised in for ten years. She’s a member of the General Fools Improvisational Theatre and everything. “I think there's something really freeing about improv, that it's a collective, creative, in-the-moment piece,” she told  Interview magazine. “That's really exciting and really frustrating, because it's there and gone.”

Single? No, she’s currently dating Welsh Dowton Abbey star Tom Cullen, who plays Lord Anthony Gillingham in the series. Which, incidentally, is also up for a Golden Globe.

Accolades: Tatiana was recently named one of Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainers of the Year and nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award. She has, of course, just been nominated for a Golden Globe. Not to be sniffed at.

Near misses: Maslany fans were angered when she was omitted from the Emmys 2013 and failed to score a single 2014 SAG Award nomination.
