Orlando Bloom: 'I want to be in my son's life'

The A-list actor said his son Flynn comes first, following his split from wife Miranda Kerr

Hollywood star Orlando Bloom has said his “nomadic” existence could soon be a thing of the past – because he wants his son to be educated in Britain.

The 37-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean actor recently split from his Australian supermodel wife Miranda Kerr, 30, but he said the couple are putting their three-year-old son Flynn first.

“I’ve lived a very nomadic life, which I enjoy. But now that I have my son it gets a lot more serious – I want to be in his life and have as much input and influence on his life as I can,” he told The Times Magazine.

The Canterbury-born thespian has spent many years skipping between London, Los Angeles and various film locations, but he claimed he would like his son to have some experience “living at home, in England”.

Speaking openly about his split from Kerr, the actor said the separation was “amicable” and there was “no wrongdoing on either side – no harm, no foul.”

Bloom said the pair had decided to end their three-year marriage due to differences between what the pair wanted “from our lives, our work”, but he maintained that “there is a lot of love there”.

He said: “It's ever evolving, but I've said to her, 'We're going to be in each other's lives for the rest of our lives and we have a child, so it's important to me that we respect each other as we always have and that Flynn feels that and understands that.' There's a deep love between us.”

Bloom, who was catapulted to fame when he was cast as Legolas in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy at just 21, is currently playing one of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet on Broadway.

However, he said that he struggled when he was first cast into the spotlight.

“[It was] jarring, quite paralysing, when I was younger. I spent about three years with a hat on trying to not be because my life felt very exposed,” he said.

But Bloom said he is feeling positive about the future: “After a period of feeling a little rudderless, I feel like I've set a course again.

“I feel like I’m very much at the beginning of something.”
