Rachel Roy, the fashion designer who over the past 48 hours has been targeted by some Beyoncé fans, has reportedly pulled out of an event citing a “personal emergency”.

Guests planning on attending a creative seminar where Roy was due to speak in New York reportedly received an email saying she would no longer be participating.

The email to guests, seen by Buzzfeed, said: “Due to a personal emergency, Rachel Roy has had to cancel this evening’s event. Our apologies for any inconvenience."

It follows Roy being on the receiving end of the “Beyhive” over a lyric in Beyoncé’s much-anticipated surprise album Lemonade. The album has a continuing theme of relationships, infidelity and forgiveness and one song hints at infidelity pretty head-on.

The song “Sorry”, which features Serena Williams in the video, contains the lyric: “He only wants me when I’m not there. He better call Becky with the good hair”. Shortly after the album dropped, Roy shared a photograph of herself on Instagram along with the caption “Good hair don’t care, but we will always take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always, live in the light #nodramaqueens”.

This instantly led some fans to believe it is Roy who is the mysterious “Becky”. Roy’s ex-husband is Jay Z’s former collaborator Damon Dash and she was also creative director of the Hip Hop mogul’s Rocawear clothing line. Rumours the pair were linked date back years and were heightened when CCTV footage of Beyoncé’s sister Solange lashing out at Jay Z in a lift was leaked following the prestigious Met Gala event.

The comments on Roy's Instagram were flooded with bee emojis and abusive comments. She later made her Instagram private and posted a tweet condoning bullying.

The Independent has contacted a representative for Roy for comment.
