Matthew McConaughey has emerged as an ardent Team USA supporter at the 2016 Olympics, where he is taking proceedings very seriously.

McConaughey is in Rio for a week with his Brazilian-born wife Camila Alves, who is working as a lifestyle correspondent for NBC and E! during the Games.

The Texan Dallas Buyers Club actor has been spotted giving dead-pan messages of support to athletes via fans, wrestling on Ryan Seacrest’s Olympic Late Night addition, furiously cheering on the swim team and supporting the women’s rugby team after looking as if he wandered into an Olympic game by accident.

His patriotism was never more evident than when he stood, donning a team USA t-shirt, to sing a passionate rendition of the national anthem.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: “I’m loving it. It’s obviously very festive; once you get into the game or event, getting to and from is not the easiest thing, but once the party is started you are not going to throw a better one than Brazil."

McConaughey is one of many famous faces supporting the Olympics. Zac Effron has been sending the US gymnastic team love hearts after all five stormed to victory and took gold in the women’s all-around.
