Robert Downey Jr’s son Indio Downey charged with drug possession after cocaine arrest
The 20-year-old’s arraignment has been scheduled for 29 August in Los Angeles
Robert Downey Jr’s son, Indio, has been charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanour count of possession of a smoking device stemming, following his arrest on 29 June.
His arraignment has been scheduled for 29 August at the LA Superior Court Airport Courthouse.
The 20-year-old was pulled over by Los Angeles police in June after they allegedly noticed a passenger smoking something out of a pipe. Indio – who was a passenger in the vehicle - was arrested and taken to a local LA police station. He was released on 30 June after posting his $10,250 (£6,015) bail.
The actor and musician could face a maximum charge of three years and six months in prison if convicted on both counts, but – as a first-time offender – is automatically entitled to a drug diversion programme.
TMZ reports that Robert Downey Jr thanked the police for “their intervention”.
The Sherlock Holmes actor spent years battling his drug-related addiction, before quitting them in 2003.
“Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it,” Downey Jr said in a statement released in July.
“There is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being.”
