A new documentary about Wayne Rooney’s life off the pitch reveals that the England football captain likes to write poetry for his wife Coleen to show how much he loves her.

Rooney is Manchester United’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, but has a reputation for throwing tantrums, with former team-mate Rio Ferdinand calling him “a very angry young man” due to his tendency to smash his mobile phones.

But now a softer side to Rooney has emerged. He said “I used to love writing poems, even before I was with Coleen.

“I don’t know why, I used to like writing little stories, too. So when I first got with Coleen, I used to write her lots of poems.”

He admits, though, that “they have died down a bit of late”.

The couple, who first met when they were 12, admit on Wayne Rooney - The Man Behind The Goals that their early dating days were a bit less romantic.

“I had my first date [with Coleen] in Showcase cinemas here,” Rooney says. “We went to watch Austin Powers, that is where it all started.”

“He loved her, you could see it,” adds Coleen’s mother, Colette. “He proposed at the petrol station. They were supposed to go for a meal but he couldn’t wait.”
