Dembele's late strike stuns Lyon as Spurs progress

Mousa Dembele's superb long-range strike late on earned Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw with Lyon at Stade de Gerland last night, ensuring a 3-2 win on aggregate and setting André Villas-Boas' side up with a last-16 Europa League tie against Inter Milan.

Tottenham were on the verge of being knocked out of the competition on the away goals rule after Maxime Gonalons' header in the 17th minute meant the hosts had overturned the 2-1 advantage Spurs held after the first leg.

But Villas-Boas' side pressed and pressed in the second half and, in the 90th minute, Dembele, above, ran past midfielder Clement Grenier and arrowed a low shot past goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre into the bottom left corner from 25 yards out, sending Spurs' exultant coaching staff leaping off the bench in celebration.

Murray set for all-star doubles match

World No 3 Andy Murray and Tim Henman are to play in an all-star doubles match at Queen's Club in June to raise money for The Royal Marsden, the cancer hospital treating the British player Ross Hutchins.

Rhinos lock horns with Melbourne

Schalke lodge Drogba protest

Schalke have lodged a complaint with Uefa over the 1-1 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions

League because of forward Didier Drogba's participation. Fifa provisionally cleared Drogba to play last week after he moved from China's Shanghai Shenhua.

Ameobi strike sees Newcastle through

Newcastle progressed to the last 16 of the Europa League after Shola Ameobi's second-half penalty earned Alan Pardew's side a 1-0 victory away at Metalist Kharkiv. Ameobi converted his spot-kick in the 64th minute after being fouled by goalkeeper Olexandr Goryainov. MORE

England seek to win ODI series

England hope to win tomorrow's third ODI against New Zealand to clinch the series, which stands at 1-1. The difference between the sides seems to be Jimmy Anderson and Steve Finn, who have induced fear in the Kiwis' batsmen.

Lancaster happy ringing changes

England head coach Stuart Lancaster has defended making three changes – including replacing Billy Twelvetrees with Manu Tuilagi – for tomorrow's Six Nations game with France. Lancaster said: "We feel this is the right mix." MORE

Hazard's late show saves it for Chelsea

Eden Hazard's stunning 90th-minute goal ensured Chelsea beat Sparta Prague 2-1 on aggregate. David Lafata levelled the tie for Sparta Prague with a well-placed shot from 12 yards in the 17th minute, but Hazard came off the bench to fire into the roof of the net.

Barker 'shocked' after striking gold

A-Level student Elinor Barker said she felt "shocked" after winning team pursuit gold at the World Track Cycling Championships with Olympic champions Laura Trott and Dani King. "It is above and beyond what I've dreamed of," said the 18-year-old Welsh cyclist. MORE
