Brunel’s hopes of victory put under threat by flu virus

Volvo Ocean Race leaders Team Brunel’s hopes of winning the fourth leg have been threatened by a bout of influenza en route from China to New Zealand.

While the six-strong fleet has been at sea for a week since leaving Sanya, China, on the 5,264 nautical mile journey to Auckland, Spaniard Pablo Arrarte has been confined to his bunk for long periods with a fever.

“This is threatening,” said Jens Delmer in a message from the Dutch boat, who took a narrow lead yesterday. “We live in such a small space that something can spread easily to the group.”

The race is nine legs long.

Brown head injury causes concern

Mike Brown’s head injury has given England coach Stuart Lancaster another headache after he was carried from the pitch during Saturday’s victory over Italy. “He won’t train this week,” Lancaster said. “It’s fortunate we have a fortnight’s break; he could be fit to take part next Monday.”

Kohli gets holders off to Adelaide flyer

Virat Kohli scored a century as India opened their defence of the World Cup with a 76-run victory over Pakistan in Adelaide. Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina scored fifties as India posted 300 for 7, before bowling Pakistan out for 224. Co-hosts New Zealand take on Scotland tonight.

British Cycling technical director has demanded medals as the World Championships resume in Paris this week. “We’re going to the Worlds to perform,” he said. “It’s not one for experience – it’s about going there to perform. We’re going there to be the best and hopefully bring results.”
