Hungry Hamilton savours debut Mercedes victory

Lewis Hamilton won his first race in a Mercedes at the 10th attempt yesterday, winning from pole at the Hungaroring with Kimi Raikkonen second and champion Sebastian Vettel in third place.

The Briton, right, dominated the race to take his fourth success on the track, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record and moving clear of Ayrton Senna. His success also continued the recent form of British drivers at the race, with six of the last eight Hungarian races being won by either Hamilton or a compatriot.

“This is probably one of the most important wins of my career with my new team,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting this. Driving for Mercedes is a real privilege and I’m very proud to be part of the team and hope there are more wins to come.” MORE

Weirwolf of London returns in style

David Weir brought a fitting end to the Anniversary Games weekend at the Olympic Stadium, powering home to take the T54 invitational mile yesterday by over 10 seconds. Elsewhere, there was also success for Hannah Cockroft, Libby Clegg and Richard Whitehead. MORE

Jessica Ennis-Hill faces an anxious 12 days as she bids to prove her fitness for next month’s World Championships. The 27-year-old heptathlete will be assessed this week and has said she will not travel to Russia unless she is physically capable of competing for gold. MORE

Briton Liam Phillips has been crowned BMX world champion after beating Marc Willers and Luis Brethauer in Auckland. “It feels amazing,” said the 24-year-old, who won every race on his way to the final. “This is the end product of so much hard work.” MORE
