Serena seals 700th career singles win

Serena Williams recovered from a poor second set – and a broken racket – to overcome German Sabine Lisicki and reach the last four of the Miami Open. The top seed’s 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory was the 700th singles success of her career, for which the American received a cake on court after the match. She will face either Simona Halep or compatriot Sloane Stephens, who were due to meet last night, in the semi-final.

Parris earns City first win of season

Nikita Parris’s goal gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over Sunderland last night, their first of the Women’s Super League season. Parris headed in from a corner on 17 minutes as Sarah Wiltshire and Toni Duggan also went close. Alex Brooks, in for the suspended keeper Karen Bardsley, made impressive saves to keep a clean sheet at Hetton Park, while Natasha Harding hit the woodwork for City late on.

Kamal has pop at India as he quits ICC

Mustafa Kamal has resigned as president of the International Cricket Council, still accusing India of influencing the outcome of last month’s World Cup quarter-final win over Bangladesh. “Everyone saw what happened during the match... India has influenced the outcome of the match using its position [in the ICC],” Kamal, a Bangladeshi, said at the airport on his return from the tournament.

British outcast Cook to fight for Moldova

British taekwondo fighter Aaron Cook has confirmed he plans to compete for Moldova at the next year’s Rio Olympics.

Dorset-born Cook, 24, who was overlooked for the Great Britain squad at London 2012, applied for citizenship after receiving funding from Moldovan billionaire Igor Iuzefovici and has now received his passport from the eastern European state.

“Although I am disappointed I will not represent my country of birth at another major championships, I felt I had no other option,” said Cook.

America’s Cup quit threat over boats

America’s Cup teams have voted to reduce the size of boats in the 2017 event in Bermuda, a move that could lead to the two strongest challengers dropping out. It is believed Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand voted against the proposal to change the size from 62ft. Luna Rossa said it “will be obliged to withdraw” if their boat was downsized.
