Three and easy for GB on second day of glory for hosts

Great Britain continued their medal rush in London yesterday, securing three gold and three silver medals to rise up the table. The host nation won gold and silver in the men's C2 slalom canoe, Timothy Baillie and Etienne Stott, pictured, taking top spot, joined on the podium by compatriots David Florence and Richard Hounslow.

Peter Wilson took gold in the men's double trap shooting, while cyclist Sir Chris Hoy secured his fifth Olympic gold in winning the men's team sprint for a second successive Games.

Further silvers for Team GB came in rowing, with the men's lightweight coxless four finishing behind South Africa, and also judo, where Gemma Gibbons lost out to American Kayla Harrison.

Ogogo handed place in last eight

Anthony Ogogo produced a superb performance in the boxing at the ExCel Arena, beating world No1 Ievgen Khytrov to make the quarter-finals. Ogogo narrowly took the first two rounds but lost the third, and was awarded the win on countback. MORE

Magic Murray powers on at SW19

British number one, Andy Murray, enjoyed a successful day in the tennis, earning a semi-final spot in the men's singles after beating Spaniard Nicolas Almagro before teaming up with Laura Robson to make the second round of the mixed doubles. MORE

Jessica Ennis has insisted that her campaign in the heptathlon, which starts this morning, will not be the routine win many suspect. "I know how hard it is going to be and what it is going to take," she said. "I know that it won't be easy at all." MORE

Petersen century frustrates England

South Africa closed the first day of the second Test against England in a strong position on 262-5, with Alviro Petersen hitting an unbeaten 124. Graeme Swann was omitted from the England Test side for the first time in three years. MORE

The Super League is trying to rescue the Bradford Bulls by buying the club on behalf of the 13 other franchises in the competition. The Bulls have been under threat of closure since entering administration five weeks ago. MORE

Downing puts Liverpool ahead

A long-range strike by midfielder Stewart Downing gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over FC Gomel in the first leg of their third-round qualifier in Belarus. The goal gave manager Brendan Rodgers a winning start ahead of next week's return leg.
