A body has been found by police searching for a student who went missing on a night out.

Sheffield Hallam University student Caroline Everest, 18, was last seen by friends at the Corporation nightclub in Sheffield at 2.30am on Sunday.

Police said they were growing "extremely concerned" for the teenager after she failed to arrive home for Sunday dinner with her family.

Officers searching the area found the body of a woman in a river at 3.45am on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Extensive searches have been carried out in Sheffield since Caroline went missing in the early hours of Sunday.

"Officers searching the area this morning found the body of a woman in a river in Summerfield Street, at the bottom of Ecclesall Road, at around 3.45am.

"She has not yet been formally identified, but police believe it to be Caroline Everest. Her family has been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

"Work continues today to establish the circumstances surrounding her death."

Officers are continuing to appeal for information about the teenager's disappearance and are urging anyone with information to contact them.
