A pensioner is being held on suspicion of murder after an elderly man was fatally stabbed.

The 83-year-old man was arrested after officers were called to reports of a disturbance last week.

The victim, who was in his 70s and has not been identified, was airlifted to hospital where he died of his injuries.

His alleged assailant is also understood to be receiving medical treatment following the altercation in Clifton Street, Bridgwater, Somerset.

A spokesman for the Avon and Somerset force said officers were called to the address at 10.50am on Thursday.

The victim was taken by air ambulance to Taunton's Musgrave Park Hospital.

Police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination but confirmed they are treating his death as murder.

The spokesman said: "A man in his 80s was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains under police supervision.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help their inquiries."
