Bamber must wait two weeks for appeal result

A review board decided yesterday whether or not to refer the case of Jeremy Bamber back to the Court of Appeal. But the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) will not reveal the decision for a fortnight.

Bamber was jailed for murdering five relatives 25 years ago.

The notorious inmate, serving a whole-life term for the 1985 killings, has always protested his innocence and claims his schizophrenic sister Sheila Caffell shot her family, before turning the gun on herself in a remote Essex farmhouse. In 2009, Bamber lost a Court of Appeal challenge against the order that he must die behind bars. He has twice lost appeals.

A spokesman for the CCRC said: "The committee did meet today and did reach a decision in principle. However, the process of expressing that decision and the reasons for it could take up to two weeks and no announcement will be made about the decision until Mr Bamber and his legal team have received the document expressing the decision and the reasons for it."

Last week Bamber's defence team claimed they had new evidence.
