Detectives have sealed off a scrapyard after a body was discovered inside a car by fire crews.

West Midlands Fire Service alerted police to the discovery at a salvage yard in Erdington, Birmingham, at 11.54pm last night after a blaze involving a small number of vehicles.

Inquiries into the cause of the fire at the site on Gravelly Lane are under way and the yard has been cordoned off.

Detective Sergeant Andy Bradley, from West Midlands Police CID, said: "We are at the early stages of our inquiry and the death is being treated as unexplained as we try to determine how the person died, and the fire began.

"We are urging anyone with information about last night's events to come forward and speak to us at their earliest opportunity."

Anyone with information is urged to contact CID by dialling 101, or to pass on information to the Crimestoppers service on 0800 555111.
