A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenage girl was found dead in Surrey.

Police said the 17-year-old girl’s body was discovered at a house in Oxted at around 5.20pm on Friday.

A spokesman for Surrey Police added: “The investigation is still in the early stages but it is believed that the victim and the suspect are known to each other.”

Detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team have taken over the investigation and cordoned off the property where the body was found in Amy Road.

The death has rocked the quiet commuter town.

Sam Gyimah, MP for East Surrey, said he was "extremely saddened" by the news.

He added: “This is truly shocking news for an otherwise peaceful community, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this tragic time.”

The girl’s family have been informed but she has not yet been formally identified. The boy is being held in custody.
