The former chief executive of News International, Rebekah Brooks, was in the dock yesterday over accusations she tried to conceal material from Scotland Yard's hacking inquiry, and will learn later this summer if she faces further charges.

Mrs Brooks, 44, sat alongside her husband Charlie and four other defendants in the dock at court four of Southwark Crown Court, south London. She is charged with three counts of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by removing boxes of material from the News International archive and trying to conceal documents and computers.

Mrs Brooks, of Churchill, Oxfordshire, and the other defendants are due to enter pleas on 26 September. Also facing a single charge of conspiring to pervert the course of justice are her former personal assistant Cheryl Carter, 48; the head of security at News International Mark Hanna, 49; Mrs Brooks' chauffeur Paul Edwards, 47; and the security consultant Daryl Jorsling, 39.
