A former radio DJ raped a 15-year-old girl immediately after his friend Jimmy Savile, a court has heard.

Ray Teret, 72, who worked at Radio Caroline, is alleged to have taken the girl to a flat in Greater Manchester in the early 1960s.

After arriving at the apartment in a bubble car, the girl apparently “couldn’t believe” that Savile, who was famous at the time, was also there.

However, the two older men are alleged to have acted together, taking it in turns to rape the girl, with Teret telling her: “You should be thanking us because we have made it easier for when the next person goes there.” He denies the charges.

Teret and the girl had met in a club, the jury was told, before he took her to the flat so he could deliver some “fancy boots” to Savile.

Prosecutor Tim Evans said the girl was surprised by the presence of Savile and couldn’t wait to tell her friends who she had met.

Mr Evans added: “She was offered a drink - a Lucozade - and asked to sit down.

“She sat down on the bed in the flat. Savile came and sat next to her. He told her she had lovely hair and began to stroke it.

“Savile put his hands up her skirt, pulled her knickers down, pushed her down on the bed.

“She said 'what are you doing' and will tell you she didn't know anything about sex. Savile raped her.”

Teret, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, is understood to have been a bit of a local celebrity during the 1960s and 1970s.

He went on trial today accused of sex offences dating back as far as 1962 and is charged with 18 rapes among other offences including indecent assault – he denies all the charges against him. Seventeen adult women are understood to be testifying against him.

He has also gone on trial with two other men: William Harper and Alan Ledger, both of whom deny the charges against them.

On the aforementioned day, the prosecutor said the alleged victim will explain that Savile’s attack kept hurting and that the whole time she was wondering why Teret wasn’t stopping it.

“As well as Mr Teret raping a girl who had no idea about sex, she will tell you Jimmy Savile did too,” he adds. “You may think that, in effect, she was produced to Savile for that purpose.”

He also told the jury that “during some of the evidence you will hear the name Jimmy Savile mentioned and count four requires you to directly consider evidence relating to a sexual offence the Crown says was perpetrated both by Jimmy Savile and Ray Teret acting together.”

He also warned the jury that the three defendants should not be viewed through the “spectre of Savile” as the case is not one of “guilt by association”.

He added that “so-called celebrity trials” had no bearing on this case.

“The Crown's case in a nutshell is that he used the celebrity that he had to abuse young girls in various ways and that the other two defendants - Mr Ledger and Mr Harper - friends and associates of Teret - also became involved on occasions.”
