Former teacher turned BBC broadcaster charged with child sex offences

A former teacher and BBC broadcaster has been charged with sexually abusing schoolboys.

Simon Warr, 60, has appeared on The One Show, as a sports presenter for BBC Radio Suffolk and also featured in Channel 4’s That’ll Teach ‘Em.

He was arrested by Suffolk Police in relation to historic allegations of abuse aimed at three boys from two different schools where he worked in the 1980s and early 1990s, teaching French and Latin.

Mr Warr answered bail today, at which point he was charged with two counts of indecent assault and three counts of gross indecency with boys at St George’s School, Great Finborough, near Stowmarket.

He is also accused of one count of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency with a boy during his time at the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook.

The media personality, of Great West Road in Hounslow, west London, is also a regular columnist for the East Anglian Daily Times.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Simon Warr is currently not contributing to BBC Radio Suffolk and hasn't contributed since his arrest. As this is an ongoing police investigation we cannot comment further.”

And Royal Hospital School spokesman told the BBC: “I can confirm that a former member of staff has been charged over his conduct regarding a pupil at the Royal Hospital School some 20 years ago, and a pupil at a previous school over 30 years ago.

“While the alleged events happened a long time ago, the school takes pupil welfare very seriously and is doing what it can to help the authorities. As this is a police matter, it would not be appropriate to say anything more.”

Mr Warr will appear before magistrates in Bury St Edmunds on 24 September.
