Harvey Weinstein has been questioned over an alleged sexual assault claimed to have taken place in his New York City office.

The 63-year-old film mogul is accused by a 22-year-old Italian fashion model of inappropriately touching her at his office in Manhattan, the New York Daily News first reported.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed to The Guardian that Weinstein had submitted to questioning on 29 March after the woman, who has not been identified, accused the Oscar-winning producer of fondling her breasts and hips at the Tribeca Film Center.

Citing unnamed police sources, the Daily News reported that the woman had gone to Weinstein’s office at around 6pm on Friday 27 March "at his request to talk business".

The police investigation is now being overseen by the Manhattan district attorney's office. No charges have been filed.

Weinstein is known as a co-founder of Miramax and as a co-charman of The Weinstein Company, founded with his brother Bob in 2005.

He produced Shakespeare In Love, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture in 1998, and My Week With Marilyn starring Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne.

Weinstein is married to British fashion designer Georgina Chapman. They have a 2-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter together.

A representative for Weinstein did not respond to a request for comment from The Independent.
