An headteacher at two academies has been arrested after allegedly starting a relationship with an ex-pupil who is now said to be pregnant.

Sean Heslop, 47, was detained on suspicion of abuse of a position of trust and freed on police bail until July 30 pending further inquiries.

He has also been suspended from his duties as executive principal of the Folkestone Academy and Marlowe Academy in Ramsgate, Kent.

The Sun newspaper reported that his arrest came after he allegedly started a relationship with a former pupil.

He is said to be "really excited" at becoming a father with the woman and "the happiest he's ever been", an unnamed relative told the paper.

A spokesman for Kent Police and the academies declined to comment on the report.

A statement from the governors said: "The executive principal of the Folkestone and Marlowe Academies has been suspended from his duties.

"An investigation remains ongoing, the nature of which is confidential.

"This has not interfered with and will not inhibit the good work going on in the schools, where the respective head teachers and their senior leadership teams ensure that teaching and other school activities continue as normal and that school routine is unaffected."

A Kent Police spokesman said: "On 31 March police arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of abuse of a position of trust. He was later released on bail until 30 July pending further investigation."
