An Irish sports star has been arrested as part of a rape investigation after handing themselves in to Garda on Thursday evening,

The man reportedly arrived at Dundrum Garda Station on Thursday evening with his legal advisor, and was questioned by police investigating an alleged sexual assault that was reported by a woman on Monday 10th December.

The woman accused the sports star of sexually assaulting her at a hotel in south Dublin on the night of the 10 December.

Garda confirmed that the man was released without charge, and that a file is being prepared on the case to be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Garda spokeswoman said in a statement: "Gardaí in Dundrum investigating an alleged sexual assault reported on Monday 10th December 2018 arrested a man on Thursday 17th January 2019.

"The man was detained at Dundrum Garda Station under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"He has since been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"The investigation is ongoing."
