A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a grandmother nearly seven months after her body was found in a Glasgow Park.

Jean Campbell, 53, was found dead by her husband in east Glasgow’s Cranhill Park in December after he had gone out to search for her when she did not return home from walking the family dog.

According to police reports, Campbell had suffered a particularly violent attack and police have been investigating the suspected murder ever since.

Now a 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Campbell's death, with a second man, 22, also arrested for allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Following a police operation in Glasgow, Friday July 11, a 21-year-old man has been detained and subsequently arrested in connection with her death. He is presently detained in police custody.”

He added: "A second man, aged 22 years, also from Glasgow, was detained and has been arrested in connection with allegedly attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to this investigation. He too is presently detained in police custody."

The arrest is the first breakthrough police have had in an investigation that has seen them take more than 1,500 DNA samples and make a number of public appeals for information.

In January and April, a reconstruction of the murder featured on BBC’s Crimewatch with police saying they had received a good response from the broadcast.

This was followed up by an appeal from Detective Chief Inspector Colin Carey the officer in charge of the investigation for Police Scotland, who said: ''Jean's family are devastated by the loss of their wife, mother and grandmother and they deserve answers.''
