A man has been arrested after a car fell off a cliff during a police chase in Kent.

Officers on patrol in Margate asked a man in a silver Peugeot 207 to stop on Northdown Road at 12.21am.

When the car failed to stop police starting chasing after the vehicle.

Four minutes later the Peugeot crashed through a barrier on a cliff, continued over the edge and hit a building as it fell onto the road below.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene and a man in his 30s was taken to hospital in London where he was treated before being discharged.

He was then arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving as well as driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He remains in custody.

The force has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Officers have appealed for witnesses to the chase or crash or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
