Man knifed to death during Champions League celebrations in Liverpool city centre

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man was stabbed during a fight in Liverpool city centre.

The killing – said to be a “targeted attack” – occurred in the early hours Sunday morning as thousands of night time revellers celebrated the city’s triumph in the European Cup final hours earlier.

The 33-year-old victim was knifed in the chest after trouble flared near the central Wildcat and Ink bars, in Back Colquitt Street.

Two other men, aged 19 and 24, and both from Toxteth, were arrested at the scene by police. The 24-year-old also had knife wounds to his arm.

Detective inspector Allison Woods, of Merseyside Police, said: "The investigation is in its early stages and the motive for the attack is unknown.

"However, we understand the men were known to each other and the attack was targeted.

"At this time it is believed that the 33-year-old victim, who lived in the city centre, was involved in an altercation with two men."

He added: "The family of the deceased have been informed and a family liaison officer will be supporting them at this tragic time.

"The city centre was really busy in the early hours of this morning and I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has any information which could help us with our enquiries to contact us."

The scene remained cordoned off for forensic examinations on Sunday morning and officers were said to be examining CCTV.

A post mortem will be carried out to establish the victim's cause of death.
