A man has been arrested in connection with a “horrendous” attack on a man who was left for dead by two carjackers who demanded the keys to his Mercedes.

The 59-year-old victim was stabbed 12 times to his arm and neck as he left a relative’s home in Hindley, Wigan, on Sunday morning.

"One man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody for questioning,” a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said. The perpetrators, who are said to have begun the “extremely violent” attack purely because they were “desperate” for the white C220 vehicle, had no connection to the victim.

Though he sustained “horrific” wounds, the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening. Following the attack, he managed to alert a neighbour who called an ambulance.

There were still pools of blood at the scene yesterday, and Detective Inspector Jon Keeley warned that there would be a “heavy police presence” in the residential area in the coming days.

Police are still appealing for information about the attackers, who fled the scene empty handed on foot down an alleyway. The offenders are described as white, with one wearing a pale pink or red top with his face covered and the other wearing a pale blue top with stripes down the sleeves.
