A man has been jailed for five years for raping a woman during a night out to celebrate his 18th birthday.

Luke Walker, of Thornhill, Cwmbran, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to the attack in January of this year, the South Wales Argus reported.

The 18-year-old met the woman at a nightclub in Newport and the pair started kissing, before Walker suggested they should go outside.

The woman agreed because she thought they would continue to kiss, but Walker raped and assaulted her in an alleyway before going back inside to find his friends.

Andrew Taylor, defending, said: “I’m afraid that Luke Walker read all the wrong signals and behaved the way that he did.”

Judge Philip Richards said: This poor innocent girl has suffered considerably as a result of what you did to her.”

Walker was also ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge.
