A man in Manchester who was arrested near the scene of a burglary has escaped from police by jumping from a moving ambulance.

The vehicle was going under the 40mph speed limit on Kingsway in Didsbury when Gobinda Chinweefat opened the doors and fled, landing on his back before running away through a tunnel.

Police had arrested the 26-year-old on suspicion of burglary after responding to a reported break-in in Didsbury at 11.35pm on Friday night.

Shortly afterwards Mr Chinweefat complained of chest pains, and officers called for an ambulance to take him to hospital.

Detective Inspector Kevin Marriott of Greater Manchester Police said the vehicle had been travelling at between 20 and 30 mph when the burglary suspect jumped out.

He said police are urgently seeking Mr Chinweefat and fear that he could be badly hurt.

DI Marriott said: "He jumped from the back of the moving ambulance and he may be seriously injured.

"Mr Chinweefat was also complaining of chest pains and we are concerned that he may need medical attention for this or any injuries sustained in his escape."

Police said that while members of the public should not approach Mr Chinweefat, anyone who sees him or has information about his whereabouts should call Greater Manchester Police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
