Met Police officer jailed for raping teenage girl twice

A police officer has been jailed for twice raping a 16-year-old girl.

Adam Provan gained the girl’s trust by lying about his age before assaulting her in the woods and later in a London park, Wood Green Crown Court heard.

The 39-year-old, who works for the Metropolitan Police’s east area command unit but has been suspended from duty, was found guilty of two charges of rape after a trial.

Jurors heard that he had met the teenager through her friend, before the pair exchanged photos and messages and eventually arranged a date.

Provan lied about his age, telling his victim that he was 22 when, in reality, he was 31 at the time. He used his job as a constable to appear trustworthy, the Met said.

In late August 2010, on a date, Provan took his victim to a remote, wooded area where she could not escape and raped her, police said. Afterward he took her to a fast food restaurant and told her to lie to her father about where she had been.

Provan then took the girl to Central Park, in London’s Harold Hill neighbourhood, and forced her to commit another sex act. During the trial the victim told jurors she had not consented to sex and told Provan “no” several times.

Some years after the “brazen and calculated” attacks the young woman told a relative she had been raped, and the crime was reported to police in May 2016. Following an investigation Provan was arrested on 1 June 2016 and charged in September 2017.

He admitted going on the date but denied any sexual activity had taken place.

Provan’s trial took place between 21 and 29 November. He was sentenced on 30 November to nine years in prison and placed on the sex offenders’ register.

“PC Provan abused his position to win the trust of his victim and deliberately deceived her,” said Detective Superintendent Sian Thomas, who led the investigation.

“She felt reassured he was a police officer and had no idea of the large age gap between them.”

She added: “The victim has been incredibly brave in giving evidence in court and I commend her courage in reliving what happened to her.

“I would like to praise the efforts of the investigators involved whose dedication and thorough work has helped secure this conviction, and the sentence reflects the severity of his offending.

“The MPS expects its officers to uphold the highest standards of behaviour both whilst on and off-duty. PC Provan has been suspended from duties, and will now face misconduct proceedings.”
