A murder inquiry was launched today after a fatally injured man staggered into a convenience store for help.

The victim, aged in his 30s or 40s, was stabbed in Selhurst, south London, at about 8.20pm yesterday.

The Metropolitan Police said a member of staff at the convenience store in Whitehorse Lane dialled 999.

Paramedics attended the scene but the injured man was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

The attack took place a short distance from Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace drew 2-2 with Aston Villa in a match that kicked off at 3.45pm.

A police spokesman said investigators were not aware of any link to the football match, but retained an "open mind."
