A man is in a critical condition in hospital after four people were stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival.

It is understood the four men were injured in three separate stabbings during the festivities.

Emergency services were initially called to Worrington Road to tend to a man who was injured. A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said a man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievious bodily harm.

Soon after, reports of a second attack emerged on Portobello Road.

Half an hour later, two other men were reportedly stabbed in a third incident on Ladbroke Grove.

Sunday is the first day of the carnival and is dedicated to children and families.

Emergency service workers say a total of 345 people were treated at the carnival for injuries of some kind, of whom 43 were taken to hospital.

Police say they have also arrested 47 people in relation to alleged incidents. These include two alleged sexual offences, 37 drugs offences and 13 counts of possession of offensive weapons.

Prior to the carnival commencing, police officers had announced heightened security for festivities at the annual parade this year amid attempts to crackdown on disorder and violence.

One measure announced was a facial recognition system to help identify wanted offenders, by using cameras which scan the faces of those passing by and flag up potential matches against a database of custody images, as well as speciallly trained officers who can recognise offenders.
