Police have identified skeletal remains found on a building site as those of a man who has been missing for 25 years.

Suffolk Police had launched a review of cold cases after they were alerted to the find by workmen developing wasteland in Valley Road, Ipswich, last month.

Detectives now say the remains belonged to Walter Victor French, a 65-year-old who was reported missing from his home in Kensington Road, Ipswich, in 1986.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Luckett said: "A post-mortem examination has taken place but we cannot confirm the cause of Walter's death.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained, however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will now be prepared for the coroner.

"We continue to liaise with the family of Walter and appreciate their patience and assistance during this difficult time."
