Student is killed by police car

A Chinese student studying at Birmingham City University has died in hospital after he was hit by a police car on Wednesday night.

Xuanwei Zhang, 24, died from head and back injuries when he was struck by the unmarked car at a pedestrian crossing in Newtown. He had been studying a Master's degree in data networks.

West Midlands Police said he was hit by a BMW responding to reports of a stolen vehicle. The car was not involved in a pursuit. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
