Sussex stabbing: Matthew Daley appears in court charged with murder of pensioner Don Lock

A man charged with stabbing Donald Lock to death in a suspected "road rage" incident has appeared in court.

Matthew Daley, 34, from Wothing, West Sussex, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. Mr Lock, 79, died from stab wounds after he got out of his car following a minor road accident on the A4 near Findon.

Mr Lock, a cycling enthusiast who had recently been given the all-clear from prostate cancer, was on his way back from a gathering of members of Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club.

A knife was recovered from the scene on Saturday and has been sent for forensic tests.

Mr Daley attended Crawley Magistrates’ Court for his first hearing today.

Handcuffed in the dock and dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the three-minute hearing.

The prosecutor Beata Murphy said the charge of murder could only be dealt with at the Crown Court.

Mr Daley will make his next appearance at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Tributes have been paid to the great-grandfather, known as Don. In a statement, Mr Lock’s family said: “He loved travelling the world with his wife Maureen and he adored his family. He and Maureen had just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.”
